Years ago, on Compuserve (yes, compuserve) they had a system for notifying management if someone was being abusive in one of the chat rooms. You could type something, I can't remember what and one of the mods would show up and "listen" in. I think Anet could implement something like this where you could type /mod with dist and place and some one could come and catch them in the act.

If they can implement a system to prevent this being abused, then I would really like to see this one. It prevents ArenaNet from having to look carefully at EVERY chat log for abuse yet lets them deal with it.
Me like.

ANet should make selling and buying in the local channel a permanent bannable offense. That would be funny.

A wonderful idea, better and more efficient then having even player mods...
One problem though. First you need to have A.Net mods in the first place.
Otherwise "Signet of Approval"

hmm they could just make the ignore list have no max. It won't be a end all problem fix but it would help a whole lot. IMHO

Well I have this and this only to say (and it's likely longwinded to a point.)
Since this thread I have noted a dramatic increase in peoples behaviors in game... More and more people are hanging out in Ascalon to help newbs. I've also noticed this in Cantha as well. Gratitude is a bit difficult to achieve but I can deal with that. What I am enjoying is the more friendly atmosphere and the fact that if I point out someone being stupid, that person takes it in stride and acknowledges it or at least gives me some intellegent reason as to why they disagree.
It was a great 2hrs in Ascalon today.... I met a guy working hard for his money but he willingly gave a newb a break on the price after he made certain it wasn't a high level screwing him over (can't blame him there).
While the spam in Ascalon is slimming, it's still ever flowing in Droks >_< and I have yet to really make a stop over in LA...
So for those of you that say get over it, just ignore it and so forth.... It can change if people work towards it, at least to be a somewhat better place.
And I think that the Scribe is making people conscious of the fact that yes indeed Anet or someone is certainly watching our behavior ingame. Maybe they just want their name in the paper.... It doesn't matter to me so long as they are being nicer. *shrugs*
Huzzah for conscious personal improvement ^_^

I agree with the OP completely and have only this to say to those who feels the same way:
Find a good guild of friends and stick with them and you will enjoy yourself in GW.
Edit: sorry for being off topic about accountability

the fix I want... which is impossible with GW but I want it anyway World PVP!
The reason WoW doesn't have this kind of silliness (in many cases) is because you can easily arrange to have a person thumped and kept dead for a long period of time... and in WoW it's very annoying to die since you don't just res and run back to the fight, you have to go and find your body to fight. World PvP FTW!
Sadly... I had my account stolen... else I'd still be playing WoW. GW is a great game (I don't get all this GW vs. WoW mentality, they're both awesome) but this accountability problem can be pretty serious. It can potentially ruin the game for anyone who doesn't already have a group of regulars that they game with.
I can't think of any viable solutions... free servers would never be able to handle world PvP, and allowing free for all PvP in the cities and outposts would be complete chaos, just wouldn't work...
hmm...
edit for Eviance: Yours is a brilliant solution, although it took the form of a comment rather than a solution. What goes around comes around. When I was regular in GW (many many moons ago) I would often give away cool items to low level players, especially as my monk (I like role playing to a degree) and I would always say "just remember to do the same when you're in the position to do so". I've had people do stuff like this for me also, as well as lots of free help with stuff like Galrath or Lornar's Pass which was a major goal for me long after I had ascended... not as a run but for the challenge of it, killing everything along the way. If you haven't fought your way through the pass I highly recommend it, unless they've nerfed it (which I doubt) it's VERY challenging and very exciting.

The whole WoW vs. GW thing is a community inspired thing, it revolves around the fact that A.Net is composed mostly of Blizzard employees who jumped ship.
I am very happy to hear that we're reinvigorated some dormant kind hearts. I hope the wave of good nature continues to grow for a good while.

I have been fortunate in my company during my game experience. First it was a guild I founded with some friends, but when inactivity plagued it (after months of fun times) I finally switched to a guild of people I had known in a previous game. They, and the alliance we are in, are always providing assistance to our people, and getting anything we need without the person expecting something in return. No question is 'noob', any mistake is looked on as an experience and not held against you, and a healthy level of mature humour is always maintained.
I have been fortunate where many others have not. Do I feel guilty in the least? Hell no.
Most of those ignorant assholes who are scamming, griefing, and all around being brats have gotten where they are from their own actions. Looking out only for themselves and screwing over decent people (especially those who could get them into their friendly guild) has got them to their loathed place in society... the bottom.
I do not feel sorry for those people, and I don't expect them to redeem themselves any time soon.
So long as there is internet anonymity, there will be people who think they can get away with it. So do as I do: ignore the idiots.

4 people attempted to scam me today. No joke...
1. offered 3k less than i asked for for a minipet
2 offered gold instead of plat
3. switched items last second
4. offered a mod 1 pt off what I asked.
Its so ****ing rediculous. I was flamed by my entire group in Hells today after getting killed to 60% DP because the idiot spellcasters were aggroing extra groups then thinking "Oh **** I shudnta done that" and transfering aggro to THE MONK (me). The entire group spammed me for 15 minutes before i got annoyed and ignored them all because it was apparently my fault they sucked at aggroing.
I got yelled at in TA because apparently I was PMSing over people not attacking target A T A L L.
I had a monk who argued that he didnt have to follow the usual "Bonder" build that we asked for because he doesnt like using the usual build that work. Instead he brought AEGIS... that was his build. I paid for entrance to UW. Got no respect. Then I got yelled at and he threatened to report me for harassment even though he made we waste 1k.
My keyboard has been smashed to oblivion because people piss me off so damn badly in this game. Now I have to buy a new one. (no joke).
I only do missions with my friends in RL now because everyone else sucks.

Well, maybe something in this line could work. AllaKhazam's forums have a nice feature - you start out with like ~2 reputation in a range of 0-5. If you post something, people can rate this. Posts of value get high ratings, flames and "quote+agree" are often rated down. You get titles by rank, not post count. "Sages" can be easily identified by a different color. And you can select which rating you want to read and which not (like anything > 1.5).
The result? People get reputation they don't want to loose, so they stick to the point with postings. Flamers and jerks soon vanish below visibility.
Could something like this be implemented? Would need some thought so that it can't be abused. Maybe evaluate the ignore lists - being on too many makes you loose reputation. Points you can attribute once a day ingame (good or bad), like mentioned above.
Then people have a reputation based on their ingame behavior (maybe with an icon to the name), and I can automatically screen out anyone with a bad rep. Just filter away anybody with rep < 2 and the virtual world will be a much nicer place.

I hate this. It puts you at the mercy of complete strangers. I know a GWforum that has this kind of system. As soon as I posted something I was at -35 credit. Took me weeks to get at +25 and than I left the forum. I understood that one gets credits when you give positive contributions, but since this was given by total strangers, I didn't trust it.
It is nice to be evaluated, but preferably not by strangers who's motives might be questionable at best.

I have been on other forums with this type of rating as well. It all depends on your attitude and your general personality when you post things. If you're unpleasant, obviously people will not like you, and you get graded down. Being graded by total strangers says a lot about my personality. I generally get positive points and it probably means I get along well with people.
I'm not very sure what you posted there but yeah, that's how it works...

I posted not any different than I post here. Oh, I remember posting that low lvl players trying to join high level quest sucked. That gave me some negative credability. What I learned from that was that giving an opinion is bad. Especially when some of the low lvl leechers thought I was talking about them.
I think some will even judge you by your grammar. I have 100K in my stash. Maybe by giving everybody 1K, they get to like me more.
To be short; Stupid system.
